Global InterGold: Philip Vs gold treasure found off Colombian coast
The 300 years old treasure of the Spanish king Philip V has been finally found! The ship carrying these riches sunk in battle off the coast, near the Rosario Islands, and the treasure has been lost ever since.
Three parties compete now for the ownership of this booty. Who will be the lucky owner?
On May 28, 1708 the Spanish galleon San José headed to Colombia carrying a precious load. English spies were on watch and prepared an ambush for the Spanish fleet which resulted in a battle called “Wager's Action.”
Inevitably, the Spanish warship ended up in the bottom of the sea, and there remained for 300 years.
Golden discovery that has passed into the history of Colombia
The location of the ship remained a secret, while the legends and rumors spread obsessing hundreds of treasure hunters. According to a theory, the ship carries gold, silver and emeralds worth from $ 1 billion to $ 17 billion.
Recently, Colombian scientists discovered the location of the famous ship, as reported by The Washington Post. The galleon has been found at a depth of 300 meters, 25 kilometers away from Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
“The ship is a world heritage [...] It is a very important finding.”
Juan Manuel Santos, President of Colombia
The President of Colombia Juan Manuel Santos announced that the researchers, led by the Ministry of Culture, utilized underwater cameras and robots in their search to film the whole process. The video showed bronze cannons in a ship of the same dimensions as San Jose, revealing its location.
Experts state that it will take years to get the treasure, and, according to the media, there will be a new museum in Cartagena de Indias dedicated to this ship and its curious story.
Colombia has won the golden match
In 1981 US researchers found the location of the ship, though they did not reveal the coordinates. Colombia and United States started a struggle in court for the right of possession of the treasures.
The judge then ruled in favor of Colombia. Nonetheless, the Spanish government has also its claim about the golden finding and will appeal UNESCO authorities.
