In the final article of the series we talk about the old treasure that was hidden in the church of the Polish city of Bydgoszcz.
Golden Treasures
In the Catholic Cathedral of St. Martin and Nicholas in the city of Bydgoszcz in the north of Poland, archaeologists have discovered a valuable treasure of 480 gold coins and 200 gold objects.
Archaeologist Robert Grohovsky said that pectoral crosses, medallions, necklaces, pendants, chains, brooches with rubies and sapphires, rings and wedding rings were found among the golden jewelry. Treasures were hidden in a wooden trunk underneath the altar of the cathedral.
The oldest coin from the trunk was the golden ducat of 1570, issued by the order of the King Sigismund Augustus.
In the photo: most coins were minted in Holland. The discovery also included Austrian and Turkish coins.
The history of treasure
Experts believe that the treasure was hidden in the church after 1652. At that time, the Swedish troops seized the city of Bydgoszcz three times. If a person who hid treasures in the church did not return after it, he/she probably did not survive the invasion of the enemies and could not tell anyone about the stash.
Precious items were made in Poland, Germany, Austria and Holland in the 16th – 17th centuries.
The importance of the discovered item
Discovered precious objects have a high historical and cultural value. The total price of gold artifacts exceeds $1 million.
The city authorities of Bydgoszcz have long dreamed of making the city interesting for tourists. So, fate presented a generous gift — an ancient golden treasure that attracts the attention of many travelers.
